The app that shook the mobile photography world, the app that took social media to the whole another level — Instagram. Initially Instagram came out as only a photo sharing platform but after 600 million milestone and acquisition by Facebook, it has grown up as a social media platform. It has gained such a huge popularity among today’s generation.
Let’s have a look on the known-unknown facts about the Instagram.
✓ Instagram was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, and was launched in October 2010 as a free mobile app, exclusively for the iOS mobile platform via the Apple App Store. By December 2010, Instagram had one million registered users.
✓ On April 3, 2012, Instagram was released for Android Phones and was downloaded more than 1 million times in less than one day. That same week, Instagram raised $50 million from venture capitalists for a share of the company; the process valued Instagram at $500 million. Then on April 12, 2012, Facebook acquired Instagram for approximately $1 billion in cash and stock.
✓ 2013 was the year of adding new features to its column for Instagram. In May 2013, Instagram introduced Photo tagging and “Photos of you”. Then it incorporated video sharing in June 2013. Instagram introduced sponsored post advertising targeting US users in November 2013. On December 12, 2013, Instagram added Direct, a feature that allows users to send photos to specific people directly from the app.
✓ In December 2014, Instagram reached another milestone of 300 million users accessing the site per month.
✓ In September 2015, Instagram launched video ads for all marketers. These pieces of content could be up to 30 seconds long, which was double the length of what an average user could record at that time. It took only nine months for the photo-sharing app to rack up another 100 million users to all total 400 million from 300 million users.
✓ During April 2016, Instagram began changing the strictly chronological timeline view to one driven by an algorithm reminiscent of Facebook’s. On May 11, 2016, Instagram updated its app design with thinner icons and a pinker, more abstract logo. In June 2016, Instagram announced instant translation feature that translates photo captions, profile descriptions, and comments posted in different languages. In July 2016, Instagram announced that it will allow users to filter their own comment streams — and, if they wish, completely turn off comments — on their own posts.In August 2016, Instagram brought in Image Zoom, allowing users to zoom into images. On August 2, 2016, Instagram launched Instagram Stories, which allows users to take photos, add effects and layers on top of said photos, and add them to said user’s Instagram story. Images uploaded to a user’s story expire after 24 hours. On November 21, 2016, Instagram launched live video, which allows users to broadcast live on Instagram, for up to one hour.
✓ In February 2017, Instagram launched multiple image posts (also called “carousel posts”) that lets you create a single Instagram post with a slideshow of up to 10 images and/or videos. Users can scroll them. You can tag users on individual slides within the post.
